Birds and Bikes

The Copper River Delta annual shorebird festival is arriving soon, and scheduled for May 5th-8th this year! You are invited to join us in witnessing the mass migration of Pacific shorebirds, raptors, waterfowl and songbirds. The birds are migrating north and will be filling Hartney Bay, Alaganik Slough, and the surrounding Chugach National Forest, feeding and resting as they head to their breeding grounds. There are several locations around town where the birds are most visible along the shore, and we have compiled a portable (and waterproof!) map of these areas, along with the distances between them to factor in when traveling by bike or foot. Included with the map is a basic identification guide of the most common shorebirds, a sketchbook for documenting your discoveries, a mini travel bottle of bicycle lubricant, a postcard to share your memories with friends, and an always handy snack! Binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras can make great additions for more precise identification. Come grab a Birds and Bikes kit from Cordova Gear and create your own private tour of Cordova's spectacular shorebird spectacle!

Covered Art Spaces Initiative

On Saturday, April 23rd, Cordova's Northstar Theater will have a screening of Max Romey's new film "Trailbound." All proceeds from ticket sales for this film will be re-invested into the town, in the initiation of a new fund to help create covered art spaces. While the scenery of our Alaskan town is very conducive to art, the weather outdoors is not always so! A few covered outdoor spots can already be found around town where the public can recreate when the weather turns wet, but we would like to expand the number of them. As public spaces they can be used for meetings, pic-nics, bird-watching, chatting with friends, or any number of activities. Taking inspiration from Max's films and artwork, we would like to encourage such spaces to serve as retreats for creating art. We would also like to map and connect these spaces with a historical art trail. As the fund grows, there is the opportunity for micro-grants to businesses around town to help jump start the creation of their own  covered spaces. Cordova Gear currently has a public covered space with a bench at the street level store entrance, it is there for anyone to enjoy.  We would love for the community to become involved in furthering this initiative to encourage more spaces and more engagement with our environment in all weather. Tickets for Max's film can be purchasedat:  alaskaadventureshop.com/products/an-evening-of-film-adventure-art-with-max-romey or at the door. Happy Earth Day!

Kicking things off on Friday, April 22nd, The Copper River Watershed Project presents the Wild and Scenic Film Festival at The Northstar Theater. Hand-selected short films will be presented showcasing the beauty and importance of our natural world. Among the films will be Anchorage artist Max Romey's exploration of marine debris on Alaskan shores. Tickets can be purchased through the Copper River Watershed's website:

Trailbound Film Showing

4/4/2022

Cordova Gear is excited to announce the April 23rd showing of Max Romey's new film "Trailbound" at the Northstar Theater. Max is an award-winning Alaskan filmmaker and artist who makes visually creative films while bringing awareness to dyslexia. After working on films from locations around the world, Max has returned home to Alaska where he now bases his art and film projects. He uses his artistic talents and vision to highlight environmental issues now affecting the state of Alaska and its communities.
As an avid hiker and adventurer, "Trailbound" follows his journey to retrace the original southern portion of the Iditarod trail on foot. The once well-traveled route has long fallen into disuse, and his solo hike may be the first documented attempt to retrace the original route from Seward to Anchorage in decades. Along the way he brings the landscape to life through his vibrant sketches and watercolor paintings.
Join us for a night of adventure and creative inspiration, and meet Max in person! Tickets for this event can now be purchased through Cordova Gear's website.  alaskaadventureshop.com/products/an-evening-of-film-adventure-art-with-max-romey
