The Cordova Trail & Covered Spaces Project
Cordova Trail & Covered Spaces Project is a vision shared by many people in Cordova, Alaska. The project plan it to build covered spaces in the Cordova area along the Cordova Trail (existing roadway) . Cordova is an amazingly picturesque area surrounded by the Chugach National Forest, Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska. Amazing views are everywhere you turn. The weather can be challenging, but very beautiful and can be enjoyed even on a not so nice day, if you can get under cover. Festivals, classes, meetings, Picnics, art activities, school trips, contemplation..... all of these things could be enjoyed more often and more easily with a few more covered spaces around the Cordova Area.

Question: What is the Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces Project?
Answer: The Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces Project is a grass roots community project to create connections.
-Connections and opportunities for people to connect. Connecting with each other & the natural world through educational opportunities in art, culture, history, natural history, science and more while enjoying time outdoors in a structure with a roof.
-Connections via The Cordova Trail to each of the proposed covered spaces locations. The route on existing roadways from the end of Orca Road along Orca Inlet to Hartney Bay on Whitshed Road with a spur out Power Creek road along Eyak Lake. The Cordova Trail would connect the proposed spaces together along this route.
-Connections to education with interpretive signage, classes that could be held in spaces, cultural events, family events while also connecting the diverse sectors of the Cordova Community with new opportunities for engagement.
-Connections for recreational events, healthy adventures and improvements to mental health.
-Connecting different organizations that offer enrichment and benefits to the community and want to join the effort of improving life in Cordova.

You are invited, join us to Celebrate the Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces project progress so far.
August 27th from 1-3pm at the Breakwater Trailhead
We will have cupcakes, an art project, and celebrate the project progress so far.
A joint effort with the City of Cordova is to create a small park with a Covered Space at the Breakwater Trailhead area. The goal is to build the space in 2024!
Celebrate with us, hear about the project, see the location where the very first space will be built and please donate before the end of August.
We are still working to raise 30,000 by the end of this month. Through individual donations, art sales and event entries we have reached a total of $10,458. By reaching our $30,000. goal, we will be creating the seed money that will help with finding grant funding to build covered structures for all to use. Reaching our goal will show that the project is supported and valued by our community and individual community members and people who work here in the summer.
The heART wall raised $2300. From David Rosenthal’s art exhibit and the Emily Rubio exhibit that will be ending on August 27th will be the next heART wall contribution. We are encouraging people to visit the Reluctant Fisherman Restaurant for a meal, enjoy Emily’s art and purchase a piece right off the wall to take home with them. But they need to hurry as her exhibit ends on the 27th of August.
We have also received $2000. from the Cordova Community Foundation for Strategic Planning and will be spending that money on a dedicated website, conceptual plans and materials for further fundraising.

The energy level in Cordova has increased with the beginning of salmon fishing season! The temperature is inching upward ever so slowly, and flowers are beginning to peak out with promising summer colors to come soon. The Bay to Bay in May Event was a successful event that brought record numbers of people big and small to ride, walk and run from Hartney Bay to Orca Bay and end at Orca Adventure Lodge. The event registration raised close to $400 in registration fees that were donated to the Covered Spaces Project and will help build Covered Spaces in Cordova! Thank you to all who participated and especially to Dr. Paul Gloe, the founder ot this amazing event. Paul invested funds and also put many hours of effort into creating this event. Happy Solstice! Summer is here and showing up in slightly higher temperatures but not much summery sunshine. The days that have been sunny have been glorious. Lots has been happening, individual donations have been trickling in and we are approaching local organizations and businesses to request donations and letters of support. We are working on the design for the Breakwater Trail Covered Space and expect to build in 2024. The Hartney Bay Recreation Area Site improvements grant from the Transportation Alternative Program through Department of Transportation will be reviewed on July 10th. There will be a comment opportunity. This grant is a 1.2 million dollar grant that will provide improvements to the Hartney Bay Recreation Area at Hartney Bay. Connecting the upper Eyak Corporation Site to the lower Forest Service Easement site. The improvements include an ADA path along Whitshed Road from the upper and lower sites, improved wooded path from lower to upper sites as well as improving the access road to the view sites and leveling sites and paths to be ADA friendly for all mobility levels. Please stay tuned and comment on July 10th, and update about time and how to call in will be provided as soon as we have that information. 5/10/23

March 25, 2023 We have been busy meeting with landowners, organizations, individuals as well as working on planning for the Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces Project. While working with the Cordova Trails Committee on the new Cordova Comprehensive Trails Plan last week we had a very successful planning process. The U.S. Forest Service is a partner on this Covered Spaces project and Dave Zastrow has been a huge asset to getting plans and paperwork completed by deadlines. Tiffiany Beedle at Eyak Corporation is working with us to create the first location for a covered space we have been working on planning, site preparation plan and more.

February 3, 2023 Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces Update
Thank you for being interested in helping make The Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces Project become a reality. People and communities working together can make the world a better place. We believe that this project will make Cordova better in numerous ways, not just places to get out of the rain and offer recreational opportunities, but areas that will help deepen the appreciation and education of our area.
As of today we have tripled the original $600 raised from individual donations at our first fund raising event last April 2022. The total amount of individual donations received so far is $1700. Your donations will make this dream a reality, please make a donation today.
A grant to begin strategic planning was received from the Cordova Community Foundation for $2000. The Alaska Community Foundation is looking for ways to help us find funding sources. We are also working with the Copper River Watershed to build a covered space at Flemming Spit area as well as working with the City of Cordova and Parks and Recreation Department to approve selected areas for Covered Spaces on city land adjacent to trails and areas already in use as recreational spots. Several City land locations have been discussed, including the Breakwater trailhead, Skaters Cabin Area and Hollis Hendricks Park.
The Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces Project has received letters of support from the Cordova Historical Society which is also the 501c3 fiscal sponsor for the project, Cordova Chamber of Commerce, US Forest Service, City of Cordova Parks and Recreation Commission, Cordova Comprehensive Trails Planning Group, Cordova Destination Leadership Team, Copper River Watershed and a letter of support was approved by the Native Village of Eyak Tribal Council and should be received soon.
We are meeting with landowners in hopes of obtaining locations for Covered Spaces along the Cordova Trail route and will keep everyone updated as there is more information to share.
Would you like to help with this project? Here is how you can help:
-Donate to the project
-Write to the Cordova City Council and let them know you would like to see them vote to dedicate spots for Covered Spaces to be built. Please carbon copy letters to cordovacoveredspaces@gmail.com so we will have copies of your communications.
-Talk to other community members about the need for this project, ask them to support the project, donate and write letters.
-Stay tuned for project updates.
Thank you, your support, donations and letters will help leverage other future funding sources to help fund this project and create a better future for Cordova.

Did you know Cordova volunteers have been working on regenerative tourism? When visiting a place, it is always a good idea to leave a positive impact on the place you visited. Regenerative tourism is about helping anyone visiting a place to (even if it is a place in your own backyard) leave it with a better understanding and appreciation than before you visited. On 9/14/22 the Cordova Destination Leadership Team wrote a letter of support for Covered Spaces Project, saying "We feel that the concept of this project aligns well with the vision and values established by and for the community of Cordova and will bolster this committee's efforts to advance healthy economis diversification in a way that supports both local residents and visitors."

We are so excited to see the outpouring of support from so many organizations, today we received a letter from the Cordova Chamber of Commerce. The Cordova Chamber letter mentions the new recreation and education opportunities the project will provide as well as the opportunity to improve ecological and cultural health. This is another exciting group that is willing and able to work to make the project a reality.

The mission of the Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces project is to create day use covered spaces along the Orca Inlet and Eyak Lake existing roadway waterfront. Spaces located at visually beautiful, educationally and culturally important viewpoints. The special spots will include interpretive signs and links for learning more about Cordova history, culture, art, botany, wildlife. This Project offers a way to connect organizations, individuals and existing trails while educating people at the same time. So many great things have been happening! The City of Cordova Trails Committee Planning meeting brought out lots of people who are interested in the Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces Project. Most ask why we don't already have covered spaces..... Well, lets all keep working together to make it happen. We now have a designated account for donations under the Cordova Historical Society nonprofit. Your donations will make a difference. The beautiful conceptual watercolors and map were created by Dotty Widman of the Net Loft. Thanks for all you do for the community Dotty!

We want to thank everyone who is interested, excited and willing to work on this project, this is a large project with the goal of inclusion of all groups and individuals. Because of the efforts of the Cordova Historical Society we now have a non profit fiscal sponsor. Barclay Kopchak, Liz Senear and Cathy Sherman all helped us to open a Cordova Covered Spaces bank account and now we can begin grow the $600 seed that was raised last April at the first fund raising event with Max Romey. Your donations will help us do that!
It takes a Village.....
This last month has been a whirlwind. We have talked with Lisa Dockens from the Copper River Watershed about the possibility of a Covered Space just off Orca Road behind the new Science Center Building on the property the Copper River Watershed owns. While talking with Michelle Hahn and other directors of the Cordova Community Foundation, we learned more about grants and possibilities for funding sources in the future. Thank you for the informational grant writing class and for lunch too! It was very nice of the National Park Service representative to give us information on next steps, possible ways to leverage donations and how to continue to shape this project for long term benefits for all Cordova residents and visitors. While chatting with Nicole Songer from the Family Resource Center we discovered that there are possible opportunities for Cordova Trails and Covered Spaces and local businesses to partner with them on projects in the future! Kristin Smith of Prince William Sound Economic Development District was helpful in making suggestions of how to work toward grant funding and making projects enhance our community. We will be meeting again with Danaya Hoover of Ilanka Cultural Center and Native Village of Eyak again in November in hopes of finding a designated spot for Covered Spaces along the Cordova Trail Route. Dave Zastrow with the Chugach Forest Service has been very helpful and offered his expertise on many of the questions we are trying to find answers to.

The Cordova Trail runs from Hartney Bay to Orca Bay with a spur out Power Creek Road.
The Covered Spaces Project donation account is now open and is able to accept donations from individuals and organizations. Stay tuned for the next fundraising event. Grant writing, determining actual locations and trail map information gathering are the focus in the next steps in the Covered Spaces and Cordova Trail project process.
The City of Cordova Trails Planning Committee will host an event on 9/20/22 at the Cordova Center lower atrium to take input for local trails and structures. See information below. Cordova Gear will give away a bicycle at the event. To enter to win a bike: make any purchase at Cordova Gear until 9/19/22 & be sure to join the customer appreciation program. In early August the Cordova Historical Society wrote a letter of support for the Cordova Covered Spaces Project. We are now working with individuals and organizations to obtain general letters of support and for land commitments that can be set aside for the purpose of a building covered spaces.
A basic map of the route, along which the proposed covered spaces will be built is in the draft design phase now. As the project continues each organization that is involved is encouraged to begin gathering information that will be used in the informational route maps, information that includes, art, plant life, wildlife, history, culture and more. This informational maps will then be used as learning tools for individuals and groups to use along the route while visiting and enjoying time using the covered spaces.
A fundraiser and informational event is in the planning stages for this fall.
Covered spaces are not a new idea in Cordova, in the past the idea of covered community spaces has been talked about quite a bit. With 160 inches of rain per year, any covered space would benefit our community.
If you are interested in helping with this project, please send an email to: cordovacoveredspaces@gmail.com. With your help we will make this project a success!

A meeting with Native Village of Eyak (NVE) representatives last week was quite positive. Possible sites, new ideas and options for covered spaces were discussed as well as different funding possibilities. The ability to create spaces to educate, meet and for new recreation opportunities was very well received. We hope to continue working with NVE to move the project forward.

There are many ways covered spaces can benefit Cordova, here are a few reasons why you and your organization should write a letter of support for this project. Cordova Covered Outdoor Spaces Project creates a unique opportunity for individuals, businesses, groups and organizations to come together to create a lasting physical and educational improvement with long term positive impacts for the Cordova community and Prince William Sound through education and outdoor activity. Covered spaces along the route from Hartney Bay to Cordova downtown and along Orca Road with a spur out Power Creek Road will create multiple new recreation spots that could be used in many ways. Connecting multiple covered spaces with different route maps that include information about history, botany, wildlife, culture and art will offer a wide variety of educational opportunities for many diverse groups. The Covered Spaces project will create a new destination experience for visitors, (especially independent travelers, the type of tourist that fits Cordova best) and offer opportunities for locals to spread out and meet outdoors especially now during the time of Covid.

On April 23rd 2022 during Earth Week Max Romey came to Cordova, Alaska to share his newest film. "Trailbound Alaska" . This event was sponsored and created by Cordova Gear and The Net Loft two Cordova small businesses. The proceeds from the event were raised for the initiation of a fund for Cordova Covered Outdoor Spaces project. In addition to Max Romeys film and very interesting talk, guest speakers Dave Zastrow from Chugach Forest Service and Wendy Ranney from City of Cordova Parks and Recreation Commission talked about covered spaces in Cordova. The project was introduced by Natasha Casciano and Dottie Widman. By attending this event, community members raised $600. This $600 seed will be planted, nurtured and grown into more Cordova Covered Outdoor Spaces, with the help of individuals and organizations. You can be a part of this exciting project.
Dave Zastrow gave an informative update on the future plans for covered spaces along the Copper River Highway in the Copper River Delta Area. Several covered spaces are planned one at the upper Alaganik River and one at lower Alaganik Slough and boat ramp area. The existing covered space located west of the Merle K. Mudhole Smith Airport runway along the Copper River Highway will be renovated with a full roof! Dave also talked about the possibility of a new covered space at the Hartney Bay parking area near the interpretive signs. This location would be a wonderful addition to covered spaces closer to Cordova that could be easily accessed by walkers and bikers from town.
Wendy Ranney spoke about covered spaces being a priority and an agenda item at the most recent meeting with the City of Cordova Parks and Recreation Commission.
Cordova Covered Outdoor Spaces is a vision shared by many people in Cordova, Alaska. The idea is to create more covered spaces in the Cordova City area. Cordova is an amazingly picturesque area surrounded by the Chugach National Forest, Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska. Beautiful views are everywhere you turn and the weather is always perfect and inviting. Well, that is not true, the weather is not always inviting, but it is still very beautiful and can be enjoyed even on a not so nice day, if you can get under cover. Festivals, classes, meetings, Picnics, art activities, school trips, contemplation..... all of these things could be enjoyed more often and more easily with a few more covered spaces around the Cordova Area. Covered Spaces enhance the community for citizens and visitors alike. By connecting covered spaces with informational and educational routes and trails, there is an enormous opportunity to teach about the culture, environment, wildlife and history of Cordova. Information, trail systems and covered spaces together can multiply the educational and physical activity opportunities around Cordova exponentially.
