Sheridan Glacier Lake Trail is Disappearing

9/4/2017

The trail leading to Sheridan lake causes us to wonder if bushwhacking or a moraine walk will be the only way to reach Sheridan lake soon.  About a week ago when walking to the lake is was a surprise to see a bunch of earth moved toward the trail and causing it to narrow by at least half.  Today walking down the last bit of the trail we found that the trail was no longer a trail but a narrow v of gravel with material pushed to the point of almost making the walk to the lake impossible with out hiking up on a smooshy hill of moraine or bushwhacking through the alders to the right of the now almost invisible trail.  It is surprising how quickly this is happening.  We also saw a large group of icebergs on shore and close to shore that must have been pushed in by wind and water during the recent storms.

The walk to the lake is always beautiful and worth the effort, but to witness the extremely fast moving glacial  landscape is mind boggling.

A rainbow surprise topped off a great walk!

We found glacier ice 10 feet above the water line at the lake.    Looking back toward the trail from the lake, the trail is being swallowed up by moving gravel.  The trail used to be about 10 feet wide between the green bushes and the gravel slope on the right, but not any longer, now it is just a v between the gravel and the green growth.
