Copper River fat bike ride

8/9/2017

If you have never tried to ride a fat bike, you might want to give them a try.  Where ever you ride, it seems like fun!  The bikes have great traction, and a fun bouncy feel to them.  Do you ever think about how much fun was to ride when you were little?  Well, that is how riding a fat bike feels!  you can rent one at Cordova Gear.

We took a ride up and down the Copper Rive at 27 mile bridges and had a blast riding on all sorts of different terrain.  It is such a joy ride along the Copper River.  It is huge, and has so much water flowing it is hard to believe all the fish can swim up that strong current. along looking at dinner plate size brown bear tracks and huge moose tracks definitely make you look around a bit more carefully while traveling.  Seals eyes at water level watched as we passed the silently disappeared as if they were never there.

Taking a break and attempting to do a quick sketch while the real artist David Rosenthal does a quick sketch that will now doubt turn into an amazing oil painting.  If you have not seen his work you should take a look at the website antarcticpaintings.com

For a fun and amazing tour take a tour out to Childs Glacier and bring your bike along.  Riverside Inn Glacier Tours offers a wonderful historic tour of the Million Dollar Bridge and Childs Glacier.  Start out driving 37 miles out the Copper River Highway while having your morning coffee, you might see moose, porcupine, eagles, bear or even a wolf!  At the end of the road where the bridge there washed out six years ago you can board an airboat that is big enough to carry 6 people, 6 bikes and lots of gear and more.  Ride across the swift Copper River to the other side and either ride the 12 miles to the Childs Glacier campground or ride your bike.  The ride was very nice, we stopped along the way to look at the streams, and eagle and saw a few voles run across the road.  We did not see a bear, but did see some older scat.  The ride was very pleasant and took about an hour or so.  Once around the last curve in the road, there is a beautiful view of the bridge, getting nearer slowly creates an appreciation of just how big the river and the 1500 foot bridge is.  .

After enjoying the view of both Childs and Miles glacier and the nice breeze on the bridge we continued on to the campground and picnic area about a 1/2 mile further down the road.  When we got there, a fire was going.  Our groceries were already there and we had a nice picnic!  After lunch, we rode across the bridge to a trail that leads to cell phone tower and an amazing view.  Jack led the hike and offered lot's of great information about the area, the bridge and the glaciers.  There is a lot to see and do and the day seemed short, next time we will make it an overnight trip!  If you need to rent bikes Cordova Gear has some great rental bikes!
