<![CDATA[Max Romey's Continuing Journey]]>Wed, 17 Apr 2024 21:27:35 GMThttp://visitcordovaalaska.org/cordova-news-reports/max-romeys-continuing-journey
In April of 2022 Cordova Gear partnered with The Net Loft to bring Alaskan watercolor artist Max Romey to Cordova, Alaska for art workshops and the premier of his film "Trailbound Alaska." Proceeds from the premier were used as the beginning funds for the Cordova Covered Spaces Project which is an ongoing initiative to build covered spaces along a trail route through the town of Cordova. The film followed along as Max and friends attempted to retrace the historic Iditarod Trail route from Seward to Girdwood, Alaska. Mostly overgrown from decades of non-use, the "trail" was often difficult to find and follow, yet navigable sections provided a rugged and wild glimpse into a rarely seen area of the state. Carrying a sketchbook with him as always, Max was able to capture beautiful moments from the trail to share in his uniquely bold painting style. The premier played to a packed theater who enjoyed watching the adventure play out on the big screen.
We are equally excited to follow the new partnership Max has formed with favorite sustainable lifestyle company Keen Footwear. Together they are combining innovation with creativity and sustainability for products that help us move through our landscape while protecting it for generations to come. As a creative ambassador with a deep love of running and painting in the outdoors, we know Max will bring Alaska-approved energy and designs to the already beloved footwear company. Check out what these two dynamic forces are creating together, and find more information about the Covered Spaces Project in our neighborhood.

<![CDATA[Adapting to an Evolving Electric Bike Industry in Cordova, Alaska]]>Thu, 31 Aug 2023 08:00:00 GMThttp://visitcordovaalaska.org/cordova-news-reports/adapting-to-an-evolving-electric-bike-industry
As the electric bike industry continues to grow it has created opportunities and challenges for bike shops and riders. Electric bikes allow a rider to ride farther, climb hills easier, and most important are helping get more people riding bicycles more regularly. The health benefits of riding a bike is well known, and an E-bike offers the same benefits as regular bicycles and is a great form of exercise, as well as a practical way to commute and run errands car free. For anyone who has not ridden a bike in a while or someone who is looking to reduce the strain on their legs will find an E-bike to be an amazing way to keep riding, ride farther and decrease automobile fuel use. As the industry grows and changes it presents some unique challenges for bike shops like us at Cordova Gear. As a bike shop we always make it our top priority to repair and maintain bicycles to the best that can be achieved. New E-bikes come on the market almost daily it can be difficult to keep up with the new technology and the vast assortment of brands which may or may not be U/L Certified. As we navigate the industry from a business standpoint we find that we have to make decisions for our own liability and safety, and to be aware of what electric bikes we will bring into our shop. We want to educate those interested in E-bikes to make the same considerations. Safety issues can be caused by improperly constructed or damaged cells inside the battery, which in extreme cases can lead to a battery catching fire. Other issues related to hub motor E-bikes are motors that are not properly designed to fit into the bicycle dropouts; there is a risk of the motor spinning in the dropouts and permanently damaging the bike frame and potentially causing the wheel to fall out while riding. E-bikes built with sub-par and often proprietary bicycle components can make repairs very difficult or impossible in certain cases.

We take all this into consideration at Cordova Gear when making decisions about the E-bikes that we will take in for repair, and unfortunately we do have to turn some bikes away as we cannot work on them safely. An E-bike without a removable battery cannot be brought in the shop. By not having the batteries in the shop we avoid the risks associated with them. Due to the issues associated with hub motors damaging frames we cannot remove a wheel from the bike if it has a hub motor. We have to assess each bike to decide if we can accept it into the shop for repair.

The potential of E-bikes to bring a healthy, environmentally friendly and enjoyable activity within reach of anyone is no small thing. Whether they help you make a grocery run, or get out on more bike rides with your family and friends, or allow kids to be able to more easily ride a longer distance to school. There are so many ways an E-bike could improve your health and the health of the community as a whole.

We encourage people to ask us about E-bikes and consider renting one to see what they are all about. Starting a conversation with your local bike shop is a great first step. We are here to help and can support you with information about e-bikes. When you decide to purchase an e-bike you will have a better understanding of the options available, pros and cons between different types as well as what type of maintenance and repair services are available at Cordova Gear right here in Cordova, Alaska.

The energy level in Cordova has increased with the beginning of salmon fishing season! The temperature is inching upward ever so slowly, and flowers are beginning to peak out with the promise of summer colors to come soon. The Bay to Bay in May Event on May 6th kicked the season off with a great start that was wildly successful, the event lured a record numbers of people big and small out to ride, walk and run from Hartney Bay to Orca Bay and end up at Orca Adventure Lodge. The event registration raised close to $400 in registration fees that were donated to the Covered Spaces Project and will help build Covered Spaces in Cordova!

The City of Cordova Parks and Recreation Department assisted by volunteers round out the crew that made this event successful. The City of Cordova Police Department managed traffic control and safety during the event.

Thank you to all who volunteered and participated and especially to Dr. Paul Gloe, the founder of this amazing event. Paul invested funds and also put many hours of effort into creating this annual event that will continue into the future and encourage people to get out move, enjoy socializing, outdoor beauty and most of all have fun. Thank you Paul, this annual event is an wonderful enhancement to life in Cordova.

The re-opening of the HeART wall comes at a perfect time. The Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces fundraising campaign to raise $30,000. during the months of May and June 2023 will be kicked off at the Copper River Shorebird Festival in early May with Artist John Muir Laws brought to us by the Net Loft and Dottie Widman.

The upcoming art show beginning in May will feature David Rosenthal paintings and water colors and will open in early May! The Heart wall will support both Artists and The Cordova Trail and Covered Spaces Project! Every two months a new show will appear along with an Art opening with 50% of the proceeds going to the artist and 50% going to the community Covered Spaces project. What a great way to support our Artists and our Cordova Community. Stay tuned for the opening in May.
Thank you Sarah for her generosity and support for the community of Cordova. ]]>
