For more information call: Cordova Gear at 907-424-5590 In early August the Cordova Historical Society wrote a letter of support for the Cordova Covered Spaces Project. We are now working with individuals and organizations to obtain general letters of support and for land commitments that can be set aside for the purpose of a building covered spaces.
A basic map of the route, along which the proposed covered spaces will be built is in the draft design phase now. As the project continues each organization that is involved is encouraged to begin gathering information that will be used in the informational route maps, information that includes, art, plant life, wildlife, history, culture and more. This informational maps will then be used as learning tools for individuals and groups to use along the route while visiting and enjoying time using the covered spaces. A fundraiser and informational event is in the planning stages for this fall. Covered spaces are not a new idea in Cordova, in the past the idea of covered community spaces has been talked about quite a bit. With 160 inches of rain per year, any covered space would benefit our community. If you are interested in helping with this project, please send an email to: [email protected]. With your help we will make this project a success! There are many ways covered spaces can benefit Cordova, here are a few reasons why you and your organization should write a letter of support for this project. Cordova Covered Outdoor Spaces Project creates a unique opportunity for individuals, businesses, groups and organizations to come together to create a lasting physical and educational improvement with long term positive impacts for the Cordova community and Prince William Sound through education and outdoor activity. Covered spaces along the route from Hartney Bay to Cordova downtown and along Orca Road with a spur out Power Creek Road will create multiple new recreation spots that could be used in many ways. Connecting multiple covered spaces with different route maps that include information about history, botany, wildlife, culture and art will offer a wide variety of educational opportunities for many diverse groups. The Covered Spaces project will create a new destination experience for visitors, (especially independent travelers, the type of tourist that fits Cordova best) and offer opportunities for locals to spread out and meet outdoors especially now during the time of Covid.
Letters of support can be addressed to Cordova Covered Outdoor Spaces Project at [email protected] A meeting with Native Village of Eyak (NVE) representatives last week was quite positive. Possible sites, new ideas and options for covered spaces were discussed as well as different funding possibilities. The ability to create spaces to educate, meet and for new recreation opportunities was very well received. We hope to continue working with NVE to move the project forward.
Meetings with people and groups are underway with the goals of obtaining letters of support for the Cordova Covered Outdoor Spaces Project.
The Cordova Covered Outdoor Spaces Project is working to partner with Cordova organizations that see the importance of linking outdoor experience with Art, History, Culture, Botany and Wildlife. The City of Cordova Department of Parks and Recreation Commission has made it a priority to build covered spaces and include them in the master plan that is being created now! City of Cordova, Cordova Arts, Cordova Historical Society, Chugach National Forest and local businesses are all partnering to build more covered spaces in and around the Cordova Area. Soon we will have a link so you will be able to contribute directly to this project. You can assist with this project too. Let us know that you are interested in helping and we will contact you to let you know how your energy can help move this project forward!

Thank you Dr. Gloe. For more information please email Paul Gloe at: [email protected] Hello All! I am so excited that we are getting so many people interested in the event!! I will ask for some forgiveness in advance for any organizational issues that you might experience during this event. This is my first time organizing an event like this and I am humbled. Please share this email with anyone you know that might be interested in the event, but did not get this email. Get there at least 15-30 minutes before the start so we can get waivers done and get started on time. The event is going to start at the end of paved portion of the Hartney Bay road rather than at the bridge on the side closer to town. It is just too beautiful of a stretch of road to miss out on this part of Hartney Bay, especially with the Shorebird festival in full swing. This means though that there is not nearly enough parking at the start to accommodate everyone. So if you are a biker, park up by the trailhead/campfire parking area and bike leisurely down to the start. Don’t forget to allow a little extra time for this. If you are a runner you can have someone drive you down to the start and drop you off. There will not be room for spectator or participant parking at the start! Waivers will be completed at the starting area. It is a necessary part of the process of hosting an event like this, so thanks for signing one for yourself and your kids. Please wear a helmet if you are riding a bike. I would recommend that if you are a 2 car family or coordinating with a friend that has a 2nd car, that you drop off a vehicle at the Orca Bay Lodge the morning of the event, so that you can shuttle yourself back to town or Hartney Bay. Orca Bay Lodge has offered to shuttle folks back to town but given this darn uptick in Covid we will have to play this by ear to see if it still seems reasonable. Having your own vehicle at the finish will also give you more flexibility to get back to town on your own time rather than waiting for a shuttle. Orca Bay Lodge has kindly offered their property as the finish area! Please be respectful so that they want to help out again next year. Participants and spectators can park anywhere on the property that is logical except right in front of the lodge. This area is going to be kept open as a gathering place for participants after the event. If you want to get some dry clothes shuttled to the finish we can absolutely get that done for you. Bring a bag (that closes all the way) with your name on it and we will get it to the finish for you. Your friends will be envious of your dry non-sweaty clothes if you think to bring them. I am going to crunch together the start times by a little bit. The theoretical run start will be at 11:15 and the bike start will be at 11:30. Parents running with biking kids will start in the second wave with the bikers if they want. For my own sanity timing will only start at these 2 official times and when you get to the finish volunteers will be recording times. This is an old fashioned timing strategy, and it will work like this, we will start a stop watch at the start of both heats and then drive the stop watches to the finish line to record times as you cross the finish line. There are a fair amount of blind corners on Whitshed and Shorebird festival traffic will mean even more traffic on the road. I ask that you all follow the rules of the road and really get after your kids if they are not. The rules of the road consist of this. Runners always go on the shoulder traveling against traffic. Bicycles go with traffic. Bikers always yield to runners. And if you see a knuckle head barreling down the road in a car or truck, not paying attention, just pull over and get out of the way. Remember this really is not a race for the most of the us, and the average times get the prizes. Please lets be street smart and stay safe out there. There will be 3 aid stations along the route. The first one will be at the LDS church. The next one will be at the Cordova Center (upper parking lot by the museum/library), and the last one will be at the bathrooms by hippy cove. There will be water at each and an electrolyte drink and a few snacks at the Cordova Center. Since there will not be a lot of snacks provided along the way you might want to pack some sweet treat bribery for the kiddos : ) All participants who are registered will stop biking at the Cordova Center. Don’t be intimidated by this last 3 miles, it will be beautiful and walking is absolutely permitted if running seems like too much. The finish will be the foot bridge at the start of the Orca Bay Lodge property. At the end there will be a bonfire and a whole bunch of snacks. It is going to be awesome and thanks for cheering on everyone along the way! Please email me with any questions you have. Thanks! Paul Join us in running, walking and biking between our two scenic bays on May 7th. This free event is open to all ages and abilities. Just get out and get some exercise in a friendly non-competitive atmosphere. The 9.1 mile distance can be broken up into a 6.1 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run, or can be completed on foot the entire way. Participants will start at Hartney Bay at 11am for runners, or 11:30am for bikers. Plan to arrive early to fill out waivers. Pre-registration is also encouraged. To register, volunteer, or for more information you can contact CCMC's primary care office at 907-424-8200.
