,Start at Cordova Gear and rent an electric bike or if you are a strong rider and want a super work out use any bike. Ride up to the base of the ski hill and lock your bike at the lower towers. Hike up to Mid Way Station, the top of the lift or to the Peak. Any of these destinations will give you an amazing view of Orca Inlet. From the Mid Way Station deck look out toward Mummy Islands and Hinchinbrook Island. A view that is always changing and is beautiful everyday of the year, no matter what the weather is like. On the way down the hill you will enjoy a nice cruise and if you want a bit more of an adventure ride out Orca Road to Orca Adventure Lodge and visit the Whales Tale for a cup of coffee, wonderful soup or one of our favorites, an everything salmon bagel.

<![CDATA[Out the Road]]>Fri, 03 Feb 2023 18:22:07 GMThttp://visitcordovaalaska.org/exploremoreplaces/out-the-roadIf you ever hear someone say "out the road" in Cordova, they mean out the Copper River Highway. As you head out past the Mudhole Smith Airport the views open up to some spectacular scenery and options for outdoor activity abound. There are many trails to pick from and a great way to get some information is to head over to the US Forest Service in downtown Cordova and chat with those folks and grab a few trail map options. So Many Options........ Have fun.

<![CDATA[Flash Frozen Fish For Dinner]]>Wed, 19 Jun 2019 21:44:58 GMThttp://visitcordovaalaska.org/exploremoreplaces/flash-frozen-fish-for-dinnerIf you like top quality seafood, you're going to love this. If you also love digging through recipes, carefully following directions and long ingredient lists, you might love it a little less. But just a little. After a long day at work I am usually ready to grab the first pre-made item sitting in Nichol's deli case and call it dinner. But tonight I figured I could wait a little longer in the name of culinary excellence. My flash frozen halibut fillet from Cordova Gear was already thawed in my refrigerator, and ready to pop in the oven. I laid it in a ceramic baking dish surrounded by sliced sweet potatoes, pre-cooked rice and pickled fire-weed shoots, dabbed about 2 tablespoons of butter around, sprinkled high quality Celtic Sea salt (also available at Cordova Gear) over it all, added enough water to the pan to keep it steaming and not scorching, covered it with tinfoil, and left it at 350 degrees for approximately 40 minutes. And I was not disappointed! Having lived in Alaska my whole life, I can say absolutely that this was of as high a quality as any unfrozen fish straight from the ocean. I have lots of recipes for fish including things such as spices, sauces, encrustations of seeds, crackers, and potato buds, but when you have great fish and not a lot of time or energy, it's nice to know that you can wing it, add whatever items you have on hand, and the minimal ingredients will only serve to elevate the fish instead of hiding it.

<![CDATA[Yummy treats at the Little Cordova Bakery]]>Mon, 24 Jul 2017 06:05:48 GMThttp://visitcordovaalaska.org/exploremoreplaces/yummy-treats-at-the-little-cordova-bakeryWhen you are having a busy day and need to grab something to go, stop by the Little Cordova Bakery. Good coffee, GREAT ginger cookies are a nice treat, but there are many more options too. Find them by the old harbor below the Fish and Game office. It will become a favorite stop in your daily travels!]]><![CDATA[Baja Taco Dinner]]>Mon, 03 Jul 2017 04:14:30 GMThttp://visitcordovaalaska.org/exploremoreplaces/baja-taco-dinner
A great way to end a day is to sit outside and have dinner at Baja Taco. The harbor is in view and tonight it was not super busy, just kind of a quiet Sunday evening. The Enchilada bowl is a small but great dish, the pork enchilada looked and smelled great and the nachos on the other side of the table seemed to be thoroughly enjoyed! Eating here is a perfect way to wind down and relax after a full day!

<![CDATA[Have a fish? Use it all, every bit.]]>Wed, 24 May 2017 18:25:42 GMThttp://visitcordovaalaska.org/exploremoreplaces/have-a-fish-use-it-all-every-bitMost people love fresh salmon but do not always use everything the fish offers. Here is one way to use more of the fish you catch for a quick and easy meal.

Usually fresh salmon is prepared as steaks or fillets. But, one of my favorite things to so is to grab a spoon and scrape any extra beautiful orange flesh from the back bone after the fish has been filleted. Not much meat is left, but what is left is wonderful and I like to prepare it a couple of different ways. You might like to try one of these options:
1 - Melt a little butter or coconut oil in a skillet on medium then add the salmon scrapings, a little chopped onion. Flip once and put it on your place and call it a snack or a meal. YUM
2 - Break an egg in a bowl, add a touch of worcestershire sauce, chopped green onion, a pinch of Celtic salt and enough bread crumbs to form a patty. Melt a bit of butter or coconut oil in a skillet on medium heat, add the patty cook a minute on each side or until the color lightens. Serve over fresh greens with a drizzle of vinaigrette. Mmmm.

<![CDATA[Reluctant Fisherman Inn]]>Tue, 23 May 2017 18:29:09 GMThttp://visitcordovaalaska.org/exploremoreplaces/reluctant-fisherman-innJust sitting in the Reluctant Fisherman Restaurant is a treat. After ordering the fresh Red Salmon Burger and looking out at the harbor, seeing boats being tied up after a stormy opener I realized, this is an amazing dinner show! Those fisherman must have had a really rough time out there with the weather so blowy and nasty during the last 20 hours. It is nice to see that they are all headed home for a well deserved rest. While finishing my dinner, paintings of Bears caught my eye, by talented artist Paula Payne. A whole wall shows bear paintings of McNeil River Bears. Each bear has a personality that seems to jump from the canvas, the fun and playful settings each bear enjoys is a delight to see. The sales of these paintings on the heART wall (created by Sylvia Lang, Reluctant Fisherman Inn owner and artist) will bring donations to Cordova Arts the local non-profit arts group that promotes the Arts in Cordova.

Next time I get to eat out at the Reluctant, my choice will be the fresh King Salmon Steak Appetizer, It had better be soon because fresh King Salmon is not always on the menu. Hmm, better put that on my schedule for later this week......
